We have been missing hunting for conkers recently since they’ve all gone now, so today we went pinecone collecting instead. Armed with bags and buckets we headed to the park. We ended up with a couple of bags full, the children were thrilled. As we moved around the park we found different types of pine trees and so the pinecones were different shapes and sizes. Some of them were a little bit damp so they had to be dried out at home, then we put them all together in a basket. As they started to open up I showed the children where the seeds sit and they could see how the seeds stay locked inside the cone until it starts to open up, then the seeds fall out. They then had a great time looking for and picking the seeds out of the rest of the pinecones.
